Many countries are working on a coronavirus vaccine. But it is difficult to say that anyone has an effective concrete solution to fight this virus. The whole world witnessed the pandemic that no one expected to happen, and nobody was prepared for this. As a result, many people began to treat the virus as a usual SARS or flu, or a complicated form of pneumonia. But still, despite this fact, everyone tried to fight the disease and find an effective treatment.
Is there a vaccine for coronavirus
If the goal is to stop the pandemic, then mass coronavirus vaccination is necessary. If a sufficient number of people acquire immunity from the coronavirus, the virus will not be able to transmit so quickly. The risks of getting sick will significantly decrease, and people will be able to return to their lives sooner.
The World Health Organization (WHO), with the support of some European leaders, advocates a fair distribution of doses of the coronavirus vaccine. At the same time some countries are investing billions of dollars trying to buy the exclusive right to promising developments for their citizens.
Coronavirus vaccine trial
On June 25, 2020, the Chinese authorities took an unprecedented step. After two phases of trials, the vaccine of the pharmaceutical company CanSino Biologics was approved for release for one year.
In addition, the American company Moderna began the final phase of clinical trials of the Covid-19 vaccine on July 27. For this, the firm has attracted 30 thousand volunteers. Half of them received the vaccine, and the other half received a placebo. But according to the data, clinical trials may last until October 2022.
Besides, Russia has completed clinical trials of the first coronavirus vaccine. the Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko says that after it receives registration in October, mass vaccination should begin.
According to the WHO, clinical trials of 29 candidate vaccines are currently underway.
In Russia, the Gamaleya Institute had developed the first vaccine against coronavirus. The vaccine has already completed clinical studies. So now they are in the process of preparing a package of documents for the registration procedure. Another vaccine is undergoing clinical trials. They expect at least two more applications in the next two months for clinical trial approval.
On July 20, the second group of volunteers got discharged. They got vaccine injections according to the so-called booster scheme — they received injections twice. Everyone easily tolerated the vaccination, but the main thing is that they have already developed antibodies.
Everyone is doing well, and most importantly, they are now immune to COVID-19.
Anges Inc., a Japanese developer of a DNA vaccine for the coronavirus, began clinical trials in two groups of 30 volunteers. The first part of the clinical trial involves the vaccination of 30 healthy volunteers. They planned to open the sale of vaccines in the fall of next year if the vaccine turns out to be safe and effective. The tests will last eight weeks. One group of 15 people will receive more vaccines than another group. Each person will receive two intramuscular injections. They will look after all registered patients until July next year.
It was reported that the Indian pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech received permission to test a potential COVAXIN vaccine against the COVID-19 coronavirus disease in humans.
In May, the American company Moderna Inc reported success during the first trials of a vaccine against the coronavirus disease COVID-19. On July 27, it was the next step – a non-human primate preclinical viral challenge study.
Earlier, the European Medicines Agency predicted that a vaccine against the coronavirus disease COVID-19 is going to be ready in the “optimistic scenario” next year.
When to expect a vaccine
While some countries — mostly European ones — are talking about collaboration in developing a vaccine and participating in a WHO-sponsored campaign to raise money to fight the coronavirus, some still decide to go their way. So far, for example, the United States and Russia are acting alone.
At the moment, scientists have developed several vaccine options and are already testing their effectiveness in animals. If the tests are successful, the next phase — human trials — could begin as early as this year.
But even if scientists manage to finish creating an effective vaccine before Christmas. It will take a long time before it goes into mass production.
Realistically, we should not expect an effective vaccine against coronavirus until mid-2021.
We should also bear in mind that scientists are trying to develop a vaccine as soon as possible, and they use new methods to create it, so there is no guarantee that everything will go smoothly.
Let’s also remind, that united scientists from Russia, Finland, Italy, Canada, and China are studying methods for fighting against the COVID-19 coronavirus infection. They want to develop a way to diagnose the disease and find ways of treatment with the help of simulations on their Supercomputer.
How to protect yourself in the absence of a vaccine?
The vaccine is helping to protect us from infection, but for now, the best way to protect yourself from danger is to maintain hygiene. Most infected people experience only mild symptoms. At this time, specialists test several antiviral drugs at once. But so far, we cannot say with confidence about the effectiveness of at least one of them in the fight against Covid-19. So all we could do for now is to wear a mask, wash our hands frequently and mind social distance.
